The Center for Environmental Education, Conservation and Research of the Inter-American University of PR, is announcing three types of internships beginning in May 2024 that will provide stipends for students through August 2025:
 

Internship 1. A study to investigate the benefits of installing filtration in small potable water supply systems in rural PR.

Beginning summer 2024 (May 20th through July 30 (full time); continuing August 2024 through January 31, 2024 – (stipend during summer $1,500 per month, stipend from $340 to $1,500 - August 2024 through January 2025 depending on availability to work on the project). During the summer 2024, the Intern will be trained in several field and laboratory practices to be able to perform these duties in a practicum from August 2024 to January 2025. Duties include: travel to rural communities to participate in epidemiological studies, water quality studies, water infrastructure surveys, and other environmental field sampling and tests. In the laboratory, learn and practice how to perform level 2 and 3 microbial analysis and physico- chemical analyses. A letter of certification will be issued if the intern completes the full internship (training and practicum part) successfully.

Internship 2. Climate change in microenvironments

Climate change and its impacts on the water supply of small rural communities. This internship will provide the participant with the technical experiences necessary to participate in a two- year study in 12 water supply systems in PR. Beginning summer 2024 (May 20th through July 30 (full time); continuing August 2024 through August 31, 2025 – (stipend during summer $1,500 per month) (stipend from $340 to $1,500 - August 2024 through August 2025 depending on availability to work on the project). The intern could choose to continue in the project for another year and a half past August 2025. During the summer 2024 and summer 2025, the Intern will be trained in several field and laboratory practices to be able to perform these duties in a practicum from August 2024 to January 2027. Duties include: travel to rural communities to participate in epidemiological studies, climatic studies, water quality studies, sanitary surveys, and other environmental field sampling and tests. In the laboratory learn and practice how to perform level 2 and 3 microbial analysis and physico-chemical analyses. A letter of certification will be issued if the intern completes the full internship (training and practicum part) successfully.


Internship 3. Immunological study and cistern evaluation in small potable water supplies.

Summer 2024 with practicum until June 2025. Beginning Summer 2024 (May 20th through July 30 (full time); continuing August 2024 through January 31, 2025 – (stipend during summer $1,500 per month) (stipend from $340 to $1,500 - August 2024 through January 2025 depending on availability to work on the project). During the summer 2024, the Intern will be trained in several field and laboratory practices to be able to perform duties in a practicum August 2024 to July 2025.

The internship is open to students from other Institutions in addition to Inter-American University students. The Center will be willing to mentor academic requirements if these candidates choose to use the time to fulfill the academic requirements of their curriculum; formal agreements will be performed with their institution. For Inter-American University Students, the student could negotiate the development of a thesis or practicums sponsored with the Center.
